Nakshatras - The Deity and the Ruler

In Nakshatras, the deity controls the general characteristics of the Nakshatras but the ruler control more the fate and mundane affairs of the said Nakshatras as determined by the placement of the ruler in the Vedic chart. So for example, Pushya the deity is Jupiter but the ruler is Saturn. Pushyarians are devoted to spiritual knowledge and likes rituals. But his beginnings are usually humble and he rises due to his own effort and that is denoted by Saturn. Saturn's placement in the Vedic chart would determine whether his effort is going to succeed easily or with difficulty and also in what area the emphasis would be. If Saturn is in the 2nd house, then effort would be channelled towards making money but with strong moral precepts backing the native's effort because of Jupiter's influence as a deity.

Thus even though the deity controls only the general characteristics, it does play a part in establishing also whether the native would succeeed or not It would not be wrong to say that since Saturn rules three Nakshatras : Pushya, Anuradha and Uttarabhadrapada, the placement of Saturn in the 2nd house would seek to determine three approaches towards making money ie. through moral precepts for Pushya, through seeking friendships and sharing for Anuradha and through far flung contacts and development via Uttarabhadrapada. If Pushya is then placed in the 1st house, then moral precepts is important in one's personality; if Anuradha is then in the 5th house, the sharing of resources to make money make result in some speculations; if Uttarabhadrapada is in the 9th house, the far-flung establishment of contacts gains expansionary influence via the 9th house. Of course we also have to consider Saturn in the particular Nakshatra in which it is placed in the 2nd house.

Sign rulerships and placements are thus supported or supplemented by Nakshatra rulerships and placements in the final chart analysis.

But the main question now is the ruler for the Nakshatras ie. Saturn in our example, do we consider the Rasi chart or the other subsidiary charts. There are many versions. Some Vedic astrologers consider Nakshatra rulerships in higher divisional charts; Rasi chart they use only sign rulerships and placements. Others consider Nakshatra rulership in the Rasi chart as well. The latter group places much importance of the Dasa lord for the Nakshatra that is on the Lagna.

The last point I have not made any firm conculsions yet.

I am going through the BPHS and feel that Nakshatra Rulership can be considered in the main chart.

BPHS does not rule that out.

Hi,

Yes, each of the 27 nakshatras has a Deity but the rulers that you mention are only in the case of Vimshottari dasha system. For example, in the example you have given, the ruler of Pusha is Saturn only in Vimshottari dasha system.
